Hi there! I cannot believe that October is already coming to a close. Just a quick reminder that students should not wear their costumes to school on Halloween! Also, the students do not have school on Friday, but their homework will still be due on Friday morning. They will have regular homework minutes. We have had some issues with students not getting their homework done. Please remind your children that they should be working on their homework each night! They should never say they do not have homework to do :) Volunteers: If you interested in volunteering this year, please let me know! Reading: We are finishing up our theme unit this week! The students have been analyzing how the characters in their book reveal the theme. Writing: We are also finishing up our narrative writing unit. The students are currently working on their third narrative piece, and they will begin a final narrative to take through the full writing process. Math: Multiplication strategies and word problems. I have posted photo of the strategies we have been using in class if you are working with your child at home! The goal for 5th grade is that they are able to do two-digit by three-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. Science: Engineering Design Process with Mrs. Strickland!
Hello families! I want to thank you all for taking the time to come to conferences last week and for supporting your children.
Google Hangout: Please be aware that students have access to Google Hangout through their BSD online resources. This is a tool for students to chat online with each other. We have talked about this resource at school, and we have told the students we do not want them using it for their personal conversations. We have had some issues with students having conversations that are not appropriate. Please help monitor your children's use of their online resources at home. Halloween: We will be having our Halloween celebration on Friday this week. Students who are choosing to dress up should wear their costumes to school. They will be able to use any props, hats, etc. during the parade. Students are not allowed to wear masks, carry "weapons", or have fake blood. The Halloween parade will begin at 2 and the party will start immediately after. If you have passed the district's background check, you are welcome to come join in the festivities! The students will be given Krispy Kreme donuts and juice, so please let me know if you have any allergy concerns. Reading: Students will be starting their next book with their book clubs. We are continuing to discuss theme. Writing: Final narrative writing piece. Students will be working on adding dialogue and ending their story with meaning. Math: Order of Operations and word problems Science: Engineering Design Process with Mrs. Strickland! Updates for this week:
Halloween: We will be having our 5th grade Halloween Party after the parade on Friday October 27th. If you would be interested in volunteering to help at the party, please reach out to our class liaison, Grace Yu. Her email is [email protected]. Conferences: Conferences are this week! We will have an early release as usual on Wednesday 10/18 and no school on Thursday 10/19 or Friday 10/20. If you have not signed up for conferences, use this link to do so:https://instant-scheduling.com/sch.php?kn=1733369&typId=58576&step=2 Just a reminder, we are only able to offer one conference per family. Thanks! Reading: The students just finished their first round of book clubs with their classmates. Each group read a different fiction book and worked together to interpret different parts of the book. They will begin their second round of books clubs after conferences. Writing: The students have completed their second narrative writing piece, and they have made great improvements! They will be working on their final narrative this week. Math: Order of Operations! Science: The students are working with Mrs. Strickland this week on the Engineering Design process. Hello families,
I cannot believe we are already through the first month of school. Your children have been working hard, and I am loving getting to know all of them. Here are some updates on things to come: Conferences: Conferences are coming up quickly! Thanks! Halloween: At Nancy Ryles, we have a tradition of celebrating the fall season and Halloween by wearing costumes and celebrating with a class party. This year our celebration will take place on Friday, October 27. Our NRCO will be providing Krispy Kreme donuts that day. If you have allergy concerns, please notify your child’s teacher. Students are welcome to wear costumes or pajamas that day. Costumes need to be safe and appropriate. No weapons, no masks, no blood and costumes should be age appropriate. Students are not provided time to change prior to the school parade that begins at 2 pm. Classroom parties will begin immediately after the parade. October 27 is also our Fall Festival and Carnival. Students are welcome to wear costumes to this event as well. This event begins at 5 pm. Thank you to our NRCO and our many volunteers who help to make these events possible. Students are NOT allowed to wear costumes on Tuesday, October 31. Class Cozy Day: Our class has earned a cozy day on Thursday 10/12. Students can wear whatever comfy pjs or clothes they want to. Remember, we will still go outside for recess so they should wear appropriate shoes for the weather. Students are able to bring a stuffed animal and a cozy blanket if they want to. We will have a read-in that day as well! Woohoo! Seesaw/Dojo: Just a reminder to join us on Seesaw and Class Dojo if you have not done so already! We have been posting some of our assignments on Seesaw and the kids love it! You have the ability to like and comment on their work as well. These apps allow us all to be on the same page about what is happening in the classroom with classwork as well as behaviors. Homework: We have had some issues with students completing all of their homework. Students should be doing a little bit of their homework every night. Each week, they will be responsible for 150 minutes of reading, a reading response on Google Classroom, and 90 minutes of Dreambox. If students do not turn their homework in correctly, then I will send home an orange slip that needs to be signed. Please let me know if you have any questions on homework expectations! Parent Help: We are still looking for a class liaison and art literacy parents! Please let me know if you are interested in helping with either :)
Class Dojo: Just a quick reminder to join us on Class Dojo if you are interested! I have posted a few photos from a fun activity that we did the first week of school and will continue to update you on class behaviors and activities there. I sent home the log-in information, but let me know if you need another copy! Reading: This week we are starting our "Interpreting Themes" unit. Students have been practicing developing thoughts during their reading and turning these thoughts into pieces of writing. We are also working on backing up our thoughts with text evidence from the story. Writing: The students are creating a list of possible moments from their life that they can write about. We will talk about "turning point" moments such as the first time you did something, the last time you did something, and a time when you realized something. Math: The students will be working on strategies to solve multi-digit multiplication and division problems. Science: Matter and its interactions Social Studies: N/A Thank you so much to all of the parents who came to Back to School Night last week! It is always a great time for us to communicate and for you all to learn a little bit more about our classroom. For those who were unable to attend, I sent home a packet with most of the information that was covered. If you need a packet, please let me know! Dreambox: We have not started assigning dreambox for homework yet. I have heard from some students that they are unable to use dreambox at home because it requires a flash player update. Here is some information about how to make the graphics work for different types of browsers: https://support.dreambox.com/s/article/ka2800000008kD0AAI/How-to-Install-and-Enable-Adobe-Flash-Playersupport.dreambox.com/s/article/ka2800000008kD0AAI/How-to-Install-and-Enable-Adobe-Flash-Player. Also, something that I forgot to mention at Back to School Night that is very important: Because dreambox is an adaptive program, it adjusts to meet students needs based on how they answer questions. It is extremely important that they do not get any help on solving problems at home. If they do not understand the concept, but get help, the program will become too difficult for them. The program should provide them with the information they need to solve the problems. They are not allowed to use calculators either! Also, dreambox is available as an App on the iPad. It is a free app called "Dreambox Math Blue" and "Dreambox Math Green". The green app is for grades K-5 and the blue app is grades 5-8. You will need to download both for the technology to work correctly. The Dreambox website says "Our apps contain unique, interactive content that covers 8+ years of math lessons, so we've had to split up our content into two different apps. As long as both apps are installed, the student will seamlessly switch between Green and Blue apps when they encounter a lesson contained in the other app." There is more information about the two apps here. The school code they will need is: udp4/82ry. Their log in information on this App will be their lunch number as both their username and password. We will not be assigning dreambox for homework yet! Class Dojo: Just a quick reminder to join us on Class Dojo if you are interested!
