Happy Mother's Day to all of our wonderful mothers! I hope you all loved the poems that your kids worked on. They spent a lot of time on them and all of the words were their own.

We made it to Biztown week! The kids have been working hard in their business groups to train and prepare for our trip this week. We will be leaving promptly at 8:45 on Friday (5/4), so please make sure that your child is on time. If they miss the bus, they will need a ride out to Biztown (which is a trek). A few details:
-Students need to bring their own lunch in a lunch box. -Students should dress professionally on Friday. We want all of them to look nice, but they need to be comfortable as well. Again, we do not expect you to go out and buy new clothes! Anything that you already have is great. -Since we are driving for a while to get to Biztwon, we do allow the students to listen to music on their phones/iPods on the bus. However, Nancy Ryles is not responsible if something were to get lost, so make sure that your child knows they are responsible for their items. -Please let me know if you have any questions! It is going to be a great day :) ELA Testing this week! Please make sure that your child is at school on time and ready to go. They are allowed to chew gum during the test if they would like. Updates:
-Next week, we will begin our ELA testing. Please make sure that your child is well fed and rested! -Biztown- We will be going on our field trip to Biztown on Friday (May 4th)! The kids have been working very hard to learn the ins and outs of their businesses :) We will be sending home permission slips this week! Homework Change: For the rest of the year, we are going to be tracking dreambox lessons completed instead of minutes logged for homework. We have had issues with students logging into dreambox and doing other things in order to earn their homework minutes. We will now be requiring students to complete 8 dreambox lessons between Monday and Friday. They are able to check their lessons completed on their own to make sure that they finish enough for the week!
Testing: We will begin our testing for this year next week on Wednesday April 18th. We will have the OAKS Science test first. Here is our testing schedule: Science OAKS: April 18th-28th Language: April 30th-May 9th Math: May 21st – June 1st It is really important that your child is in school during this time to ensure that they have all the time they need. Students will only have ten days to finish a test once they have started. Please make sure that your child is well rested and comes to school with a healthy snack :) BizTown Interviews: We are well on our way to completing our BizTown job applications, and we will be having interviews for the jobs as well. We will need a couple of parent volunteers to help us run these interviews on April 20th from 10:40-12:10. If you would be interested in helping us out, please send me an email! This week: Reading: We are moving on to our new unit, Argument and Advocacy. Students will be looking at opinion articles and doing further research on topics. Writing: The students are working on their first opinion piece about whether zoos are helpful or harmful to animals. Math: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions Social Studies: Biztown! We have been working on writing checks and correctly filling in a check register. The class will have homework to practice these skills as well, because this will be very important for them to know on our field trip in May. Feel free to help them if they need it :) I cannot believe we are almost to Spring Break already! This year is flying by.... Here are a couple of things coming up!

Conferences: Thank you all for signing up for conferences this week! I am looking forward to discussing your child's progress this year :) I will have a copy of your child's report card to discuss with you. If something changes and you are unable to make it to your conference time, please let me know as soon as possible! Reading: We are continuing to study Fantasy books. The students are working on an independent book study for a fantasy book at their independent reading level. Writing: The students are continuing to write about their philanthropist. Once we have finished the research report, the students will be working on a presentation in class and at home. They will be creating a slide show to teach the class about their philanthropist. This will be our first speech in class. Math: Fractions! Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Social Studies: The students are learning about colonies. They are split up into colony groups and will be starting a simulation with their group next week. The students have been working to earn "wealth units" as a team by completing mapping assignments. Valentine's Day: We will be having our classroom Friendship Party on Valentine's Day from 1:05-1:35. I sent home information last week about class valentines and our Valentine Box Competition. If you need another copy of our class list, let me know!
No School for President's Day 2/19 Culture Night: The class received puzzle pieces that they are required to finish for our Nancy Ryles Culture Night! The puzzle piece should represent your family's traditions and culture. Report Cards: Report cards came home last week. Please make sure to sign the envelope and send it back with your student this week. We reuse the envelopes each semester. I will be happy to discuss any questions or concerns at conferences at the end of this month! Conferences: Conferences are sneaking up on us! Please click on this link to access the registration site: Conference Sign Up Site Reading: We are currently in the middle of our Fantasy Unit, and the students are reading fantasy novels with their book clubs. We have been reading the book The Thief of Always as a class, and the students have loved discussing the different aspects of this book. Writing: We are currently researching a philanthropist that the students will be writing a report on. Math: Equivalent Fractions, Adding/Subtracting Fractions, Reducing Fractions to Simplest Form. Social Studies: We have started our colonies unit! This is a very engaging and exciting unit that ends with a colony simulation. This unit will require extra work outside of class, and it is really important that the students stay on top of their assignments. They will be earning points for their work, and their team will lose points if they do not complete the assignments. Reading: We have started our Fantasy unit! This is always one of the students' favorites. They will be working in book clubs to read fantasy novels at their individual levels. Each day, the book clubs will meet to discuss different aspects of their book.
Writing: We are finishing up our 2nd informational writing piece! These research reports will go along with the animal projects they have been working on at home. We have also started a new word study program called Words Their Way. The students will get a list of words that follow a specific spelling pattern. The goal is for the students to not simply memorize the words, but to understand how the spelling pattern is applied to many different words. This week it is words that end up with a double consonant, drop an e, or having nothing happen. The class will be working on this spelling pattern in class, but will be tested next week. Please help them study at home! Our words are: setting, hiking, reading, floating, stopping, coming, grinning, jogging, pushing, fixing, cutting, living, begging, having, sharing, humming, going, moving, spelling, growling, cheering, talking, working, and snowing. Math: We are working on finding equivalent fractions! We will be moving on to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with fractions soon. Also, the students are continuing to work on their own fact fluency goals. Please help your child practice their facts at home! This will really help them when we get to multiplication/division of fractions. Science: Our class is currently in science with Mrs. Putnam and Mrs. Miller learning about animal adaptations. Animal Projects: DUE WEDNESDAY 1/31. This project needs to be completed AT HOME! Happy New Year everyone! I cannot believe it is already January. Here are a few things happening this week:
